Man who holds toddlers while pointing pistol toward officers shot and killed: police

A man who held a 1-year-old boy while pointing to a gun against officers was shot and killed under a hostage in Indiana.

According to a press release From the Gary Police Department, officers were first called to a home at the 2200 quarter of Carolina Street on Tuesday, April 8, after a woman reported that “her boyfriend acted strangely inside her home after using drugs before, had a gun and had locked in a room with her one-year-old child.”

Soon after, Dispatch received another call about a shooting victim nearby, related to the incident. The victim was a 35-year-old cousin to the woman’s boyfriend, a 38-year-old man.

The police said that the cousin had gone to have toddlers before the police arrived and during this attempt the 38-year-old became “aggressive and shot him.”

“The cousin then left without the child, returned to his own home and called the police,” the press release said. According to a press release From the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the cousin suffered a “minor injury” and refused medical treatment at the site.

The Gary Police Department said that officers were then contacted with the 38-year-old and tried to scream the situation. He then shot is alleged about four times through the door towards the officers. Officers said they could “hear the child cry inside but could not see the child.”

Around 04:20 Wednesday, April 9, Lake County Sheriff’s Department said that the suspect “went out of the back door at his vehicle and held the child and pointed a gun at the police.”

A Gary police opened fire to the suspect, who was later pronounced deceased. The 1-year-old was unharmed but was taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake as a precaution and the family services department was announced.

The officer involved in shooting has been placed in administrative leave, according to the Gary Police Department. Lake County Sheriff’s Department is investigating shooting and said that no further information will be released right now.
