Man, 67, died after being wrongly fed with Jello at the hospital, hears the court

An elderly man with swallowing difficulties died at a hospital in England after he was wrongly got Jello, a court has heard.

A two -day issue held last week in the city of Milton Keynes, about 50 miles north of London, heard that Eddie Cassin, 67, died in June 2023 after “negligently fed (Jello) by nurses at Milton Keynes University Hospital despite having a known problems with swallowing certain foods and fluids, “according to the law firm Field fishermen.

A Milton Keynes Coroner’s Court Record of survey obtained by people confirmed that Cassin died four days after he got the food. He had previously been diagnosed with dysfagi, which “can be a painful condition” and “is a medical term for difficulties in swallowing”, according to Mayo Clinic.

Fieldfisher – who represented Cassin’s family during the investigation – added that he had been “on a modified diet and demanded monitoring when eating to mitigate the aspiration risk.”

“Jelly (Jello) was specifically highlighted and repeatedly in his notes as a food he would not be given,” they added in his release.

“Despite this, he was repeatedly fed (Jello) throughout his stay in hospital, including on June 24. That day he was generally” of variety “with little appetite,” continued the law firm’s service.

The victim had been “hospitalized after falling in his nursing home and in early June it was fit and waited to be released to a new nursing home,” the company said.

Assistant Coroner Sean Cummings registered Cassin’s medical cause of death as aspiration pneumonia, chronic dysfagi and type 2 diabetes, according to the registry of Inquest obtained by humans. The document added that Cassin “was an older man with complex medical needs and learning difficulties.”

Aspiration pneumonia is “a lung infection” that damages the “lower respiratory tract”, according to National Institutes of Health (Nih).

“People with learning difficulties or gastrointestinal and neurological disorders that interfere with normal swallowing function also have an increased risk,” the description.

Cummings said that neglect contributed to Cassin’s death, and if he had been treated for his developmental environment, he would probably not have died when he did, the interior confirmed.

Assistant Coroner added that the victim’s diabetes reportedly had been “difficult to handle” and that there had been “several changes to his insulin regime.”

“Because he was not sufficiently monitored, Cassin remained with food and medication in his mouth, causing him to aspire (inhale),” added Fieldfisher in his post. “Medical personnel did not admit this and the coron concluded that it aggravated his already developing aspiration pneumonia.”

The registration of Inquest stated that on June 24, 2023, Cassin had suffered a hypoglycemic section that required treatment, but the hospital guidelines were reportedly not followed.

Hypoglycemia “needs immediate treatment” and “is a condition where your blood sugar (glucose) level is lower than the standard area”, according to Mayo Clinic.

A spokesman for Milton Keynes University Hospital said in a statement obtained by people, “We are deeply saddened by Mr. Cassin’s failure. We fully recognize the deep distress that Mr. Cassin’s family is experiencing and would try to assure them that we has taken careful measures to understand what happened, including the assignment of an independent external review.

“In addition, we have made meaningful changes in politics and practice to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. We will respond to His Majesty’s criminal prevention of future deaths in its entirety,” concluded the statement.

Fieldfisher did not answer immediately when contacted by People for further information.
