They decided to use his middle name, Lawrence, as his last name, and when Matthew, 45, and Andrew, 37, followed him into the show industry, “it was only meaningful” for them to use it too.

Matthew pointed out that it was an advantage with this, as it gave the children’s stars some integrity in their lives off the screen. “There was an insulation factor,” he said. “Some people may check in in the old school’s way, but it would be very, very difficult to find us. It was a fantastic thing.”

But he said, “Now I’m just stuck with two different names and I can’t travel internationally.”

All three brothers agreed that they wish they could go back to their original name. “It would have made it easier,” Andrew said. “It’s really a pain in the butt, honestly, like having two names. You have to prove you both people.”

Matthew added, “Even for a while, the government only acknowledged me as Matt Lawrence because I paid taxes from the time I was a child to 18 as Matt Lawrence.”
