People: It’s been eight months since you released “Joyride” as the first single on Kesha Records, of which you are CEO. How did it feel to be the captain of your ship?
Kesha: God, it feels incredible. I am so severely protective for my freedom now. There has been a lot of healing in watching “Joyride” explodes and doing “Holiday Road” in a couple of hours and watching it exploding around the holiday. For a long time I was convinced that there must have been everyone else around me, why I succeeded, and the past year has proven that it has done not been. I have taken back the power of my own hands with my team. It is f — ing fantastic, really strengthening, and I am really inspired to help strengthen other artists as well, because artists have the power. We have the magic.
People: You have posted two songs so far, “Joyride” and “Budhirstal”, which is completely different from each other. How do these two songs work as a preview of what will come on your album?
Kesha: This record is really the first time I have no chlorine in the back. It is an album that shows all the different pages of me, from Psychosis Sex Demon to really vulnerable, confessional songs. I think the review, although the songs all show different sides of me, have the power and free, frequently freed and freested. I am free sexually, and I’m just real to eat life right now, and it feels so good to be able to do it as a free woman, for the first time in my life. It really feels like my first record.
People: In the past year or so, as you have been in this era of freedom, I have really loved to see you collaborate and perform with other women who Charli XCX and Renee Rapp. How has it been to be able to support each other as women in the pop music game?
Kesha: My God. When I first came out it was an interesting time in music where there were many comparisons, and it felt like you had to choose a page. It felt like there were many more people trying to get women to compete with each other. What is really beautiful about the past year is not only I can collaborate with these F — ing incredible women because I want to, but it has also felt that we are all in this together. These are my comrades. These are people I listen to when I get ready to go out. These are people I admire. These are people who inspire me. It has only been very incredible to see these women who support me in my process to rebuild.
People: I have loved to see your Online Fandom Over Lady Gagas Devastation. How have you had the album, and what are your favorite songs?
Kesha: I’m such a small monster. I have realized that my animals look at me in a way that is so I look at Lady Gaga. I counted down until the disc came out. I’m obsessed with “Abracadabra.” I also love “grass blade.” It’s so good. “How bad do you want me” is fantastic. “The animal”, sexy. It’s literally the last thing I just listened to before this phone call. “Killah” is also amazing and her achievements on SNL Be incredible. She is a bit like a one-in-one million artist, and I’m lucky to be able to see this in real time.
People: I love how big you think you both came up in the same class pop stars.
Kesha: Her first song did not come out that long before mine, but I’ve always looked up to her. She is such an incredible artist, singer and writer. She is really inspiring. It’s crazy because people at the beginning of my career would compare us, and I was like, “please don’t compare myself to my girl,” aghast “, there is no comparison.” People like to compare artists with each other, but what they do not understand is that the only competition in art is with themselves. I think it is really important for artists to just know that we are obsessed with each other. I consume her art and Charli’s art and Renee’s art. They do so much for me.
