“I want a sex scene to be hot, yes, but I also want it to deepen the link between the characters, and I want it to drive the story,” says Ryan. “When I write, these scenes are not wasted for me. They are very determined … because something seismic has happened between these two people. ”
It is true for the relationship between Hendrix and Maverick, whose attraction for each other builds when they handle their own life problems. Hendrix, for one, must negotiate to take care of his mother, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Ryan also notes that the book “reflects the times” in many ways, especially with its protagonist, who is childless of choices.

“I have been very intentional with the discourse that I hope we will have,” says Ryan. “Even when we swing, even when we kiss, there are some real things we can interrogate as we read.”
The author says that she has to a large extent seen a “real revolution” in the romance genre, especially with regard to the emergence of underrepresented stories, such as those of Adriana Herrera, Tia Williams and Beverly Jenkins. Her own work has also led to her becoming the first black winner of the prestigious Rita Award for best contemporary romance.
“I write from the margins to the center, which means all identity, community or group that is usually moved to the edges, in my stories I want to drive them to the center,” says Ryan.

Another central theme in her work? Celebrates happiness – and there is a lot of it in Can’t get enough.
“Many times our results are tougher in reality,” says Ryan. “I have to control it, and I have to make sure black women, brown women, queer women, disabled people, chronically ill people, queer people, may see themselves living with joy.”
