Short list for 2025 Carol shields prize for fiction is here.
People can exclusively reveal the short list for the prestigious literary award, which honors novels, short story collections and graphic novels written by women and non-binary writers in the United States and Canada.
The full card list includes Pale shadows by Dominique Fortier, translated by Rhonda Mullins, All four by Miranda July, Black code by Canesia Lubrin, Liar by Sarah Manguso and River East, River West by Aube Rey Lescure.

This year’s five titles were elected by the prize jury chairman Diana Abu-Jaber, together with the authors Norma Dunning, Kim Fu, Tessa McWatt and Jeanne Thornton.
The winner will receive $ 150,000 US dollars and a stay at Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland. Runners will each receive $ 12,500 and are invited to participate in a group of retreat housing at Leighton Artist Studios at the Banff Center for Arts and Creativity in Alberta. Prize money for translated literature, if selected, will be shared between the author and the translator.

VV Ganeshananthan Won the 2024 Prize, which is named after productive writer Carol Shields, for his novel Brotherless night. Other previous winners have included Eleanot Catton (Running), Fatimah Asghar (When we were sisters) and Daphne Palasai Andrees (Brown girls).

The winner of the prize will be announced on May 1 during a ceremony in Chicago.
