College Crew Team athletes who are taken to hospital after boat capsules due to weather displacement

More than a dozen New York City College students were taken to the hospital after their row boat was enclosed in Eastchester Bay.

According to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), athletes, staff and other students with Fordham University’s Men’s Club Roddlag Was out on the water just outside City Island in Bronx on Saturday afternoon, April 5, when their boat enclosed.

FDNY told People that the first answers were sent to the scene after a witness called 911 about 12:15 local time, and a civilian boat helped to bring all 19 people – including nine athletes, eight additional students and two buses – on board the two vessels to the beach on the nearby peninsula in Rodman’s neck.

“Fordham may confirm that nine members of the men’s club’s rowing team were pulled from the water after their boat was enclosed due to a sudden shift in the weather conditions in Eastchester Bay,” Fordham University told People in a statement.

“The New York City Orders demanded that the nine student athletes and the eight additional students and two buses helped them be taken to hospitals in the area for investigation because the party came ashore on City property at Rodman’s neck,” the university. “There were no injuries, and all individuals involved were examined and released.

According to the team’s website, Fordham Crew Team in Long Island Sound, Eastchester Bay and Hutchinson River, as well as at Harlem Yacht Club in City Island, is practicing about four miles from the school campus.
