1982 Bombing Suspected Arrested after 40+ years on the run

A man who wanted to attempt after murder after he is alleged to have planted a bomb that injured his foreign wife in 1982 has finally been arrested.

According to a press release From the US law office for the New Mexico district, Stephen Craig Campbell, now 76, was arrested in weeds, NM, February 19, after being on the go for over four decades.

An investigation showed that Campbell is said to use the identity of Walter Lee Coffman, who died in 1975 at the age of 22, to avoid authorities and fraudulently few state benefits.

The survey showed a likely link between Campbell and Coffman as they both continued technical degrees at the University of Arkansas during the same period.

According to the US law firm, Campbell was arrested in Wyoming in 1982 for attempted murder after he is alleged to have planted an explosive device at the door of his foreign wife’s boyfriend.

His wife stopped allegedly opening a tool box that contained the bomb, which exploded and caused her to lose a finger and suffer other injuries. The blast also set fire to the home and an adjoining unit.

While he was reportedly released on Bond in 1983, he failed to show up in court, resulting in an active commander for attempted murder. He also faced a federal firearm fee in connection with that incident, per ABC News.

The American lawyer’s office claims that Campbell first applied for a passport under Coffman’s name in 1984 and renewed it several times and gave a photograph of itself. Campbell also received a replacement social insurance card in Coffman’s name in 1995 with an Oklahoma driver’s license in Coffman’s name.

When Campbell moved to weeds around 2003, he bought alleged property in Coffman’s name. He reportedly used his New Mexico address while renewed his passport under Coffman’s name in 2005 and 2015, with an updated photograph every time.

While he was able to renew his driver’s license in New Mexico in September 2019, the US law office said that it was when agents from the National Passport Center’s fraud prevention unit discovered Coffman’s death and the suspected fraudulent use of his identity.

The survey also showed that Campbell is alleged to have been awarded the Social Insurance Department II Pension Insurance Benefits of approximately $ 140,000 under Coffman’s name.

After the authorities received warrants for Campbell’s arrest and for searching his 44 acres of large property, he greeted them “dressed in camouflage, hearing protection and armed with a scoped .302 caliber Fal rifle”, Per ABC news, with reference to a detention memo.

After Campbell was arrested, fingerprints confirmed its real identity and a subsequent search of the property that led to the discovery of 57 firearms and large amounts of ammunition.

He was charged with abuse of a passport and will remain in custody while waiting for trial.
