An American tourist was attacked by a shark during spearfishing in the Bahamas.
The incident occurred shortly after 13:00 local time on Sunday, August 17, according to one statement from the Royal Bahamas police force.
The police responded to the scene of the attack near the Big Grand Cay on the island of Abaco. According to the statement, the first reports indicate that a 63-year-old man spearfishing when he was attacked by a shark.
He suffered “serious injuries,” police say.
The unidentified man was taken to a local medical help clinic before being lifted to the United States for further treatment. There has been no update to his current condition.

Spearfishing is a popular activity in the Bahamas. The sport means using a sharp pointed tool such as a harpoon, spear or gig to impal the body of a fish.

While shark attacks have made headlines during the summer, they are actually considered extremely rare. The Florida Museum quotes the odds to be attacked by a shark as one of 11.5 million.
According to Tracking sharkswhich provides data on shark attacks all over the world, there have been 38 shark attack pieces this year, from July, eight of which were fatal. Twelve of them occurred in the United States, and no one was deadly.
Back in March, after a series of shark attacks and crime events in the Bahamas, the US Foreign Ministry issued an Travel advice for the Caribbean country. Level 2 warning warned the Americans to “keep awake for sharks” when they visited.
“Haj attacks have led to serious injuries and deaths,” said the department’s officials.
