A small child who spent nine months in the newborn and infant’s critical care unit (Niccu) has finally returned home with their parents.
Judea “Juju” Monogan, who was born prematurely after 27 weeks, received treatment for severe chronic lung disease, also known as bronchopulmonal dysplasia, Ktla reported. He weighed only 1.5 kg. at birth.
Juju, whose family comes from Apple Valley, California, brought him to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) after receiving two other hospitals. He arrived at the Medical Center on September 4, 2024. When he left the facility on June 9, he weighed £ 22.88.
Toddlers, now 14 months old, had never been home until his discharge from Cha. His mother, Irish, stood nearby to support him through treatment, with the help of Ronald McDonald House, according to Ktla.
“Going from thinking that you would not go from here with your son, then to do just that – go from here with your son – it’s an indescribable feeling,” Irish told the news station.
“Juju was born very early and when he came to Chla he suffered from severe lung disease and needed very specialized care that we provide in our Niccu,” Dr. Narayan Iyer, Jujus Neonatologist, to Ktla.

Iyer continued, “He has a lot of growth and development ahead of him, but we completely expect him to play T-ball as every child when he is five.”
He ended by thanking Jujus’s family for their support during toddlers’ treatment trip. “His recovery was partly due to their presence for him, and I applaud them.”
Juju will continue to receive outpatient care through Chla’s chronic lung disease program.
Bronchopulmonal dysplasia is caused by poor lung growth and lung injury, according to Children’s hospital in Philadelphia. It often occurs among infants born prematurely, who need respiratory support to breathe.
