Chew defended Tiktok during Thursday’s hearing, TikTok: How Congress can protect American data secrecy and protect children from online injuries.

When he was pressed for China’s control over Tiktok, Chew confirmed that the app “is not available in China” and that its current head office is in Los Angeles and Singapore.
“I am not saying that the founders of BytaDance are not Chinese, nor do I say that we do not use Chinese employees, just like many other companies around the world,” he said.
Despite Chew’s insurance, many congress members continued to shoot back to the app.

“We do not trust that TikTok will ever embrace American values - values for freedom, human rights and innovation,” said Committee chairman Cathy McMorris Rodgers at the beginning of the negotiation.
“I am not convinced that the benefits outweigh the threats it pose to the Americans in their present form,” added representative Frank Pallone.
The criticism continued while Chew spoke, with representative Anna Eshoo who called her claim that there is no evidence that the Chinese government had access to user data “actually exaggerated.”
In response to the concerns, Chew promised to “the firewall protect US data from unwanted foreign access” and identified the security of younger users as a “highest priority” in the future.
“Tiktok will remain a place for free expression and will not be manipulated by any government,” he said.
Chew received support before his hearing during a ‘keep tictok’ rally on capitol, which included content creators and several Politician which urged the government not to ban the app.
