A Southeast Asian country is the subject of a renewed travel advice from the US government.
The US Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, April 30 that Indonesia has been classified with a level 2 travel advice of “Exercise increase increased caution.” The advisory quotes the increased risk of “terrorism and natural disasters.”
However, some areas in Indonesia were noticed with the highest travel consultation level, on a level 4 counseling of “Travel not.” It is recommended to avoid central Papua and Highland Papua, and especially Jayawijaya, found in Highland Papua, and Nabire, Timika and Mimika, which are found in central Papua.
“In central Papua and Highland Papua, violent demonstrations and conflicts can lead to injuries or deaths for American citizens,” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs website mentioned. “Avoid demonstrations and crowds. Armed separatists may kidnap foreign citizens.”
As of February 2025, students over Indonesia began protesting as opposed to President Prabowo Subiantos policy, Per Reutants.

Travelers were also warned that the US government has “limited ability” to help citizens in the case of emergency situations because the authorities’ officials must secure special visas before visiting the aforementioned areas.
“Due to the risks, the US government has limited ability to provide rescue services to US citizens in central Papua and Highland Papua, as US government employees working in Indonesia must be given special permits before traveling to these areas,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The day before the travel counseling for Indonesia was issued, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that Indonesia’s neighbor, Papua New Guinea, received a counseling at level 3 of “rethink travel.”
Papua New Guinea borders Indonesia in the east. Travelers are urged to re -examine travel “due to crime, civil concern and piracy,” per Ministry of State. “Exercise increased caution due to kidnapping, unexploded order, inconsistent accessibility of healthcare services and potential for natural disasters.”
Areas near the Panguna mine on the island of Bougainville and the Highland region (except MT. Hagen and Goroka) have level 4 warnings about “not traveling.” Both counseling is due to civil concerns.
