The lottery organizer apologizes after telling people that they had won

Thousands of lottery winners in Norway have been disappointed after being informed that the big money prices they had been told that they had won actually explained by mistake.

On Friday, June 27, Norwegian Tipping customers were informed that they had won large sums of money in the Eurojackpot draw, just to hear hours later that their winnings were incorrect because of a “manual error” in the calculations.

“Norwegian Tipping receives the price amounts from Germany in Eurocents and then converts them to the Norwegian Crown. It is during this conversion that a manual error was made in the code that is entered in our game engine,” Norsk Tipping announced in a statement The next day.

The company explained that the profits had been multiplied by 100, instead of being split by 100, which led to customers believing that they had scooped much more money than they actually had.

“The incorrect price amounts were removed from the site and the app on Friday night,” said Norwegian Tipping. The right prices were sent about 03:15 local time and completed with about 04:30 local time. No customers received the wrong premium, says the company.

Several Norwegian had already made big plans with their incorrect lottery profits, including a couple who believed they had won SEK 1.2 million ($ 118,901) while working on a home renovation at that time, The custodian reported.

Another resident also believed that they had won SEK 1.9 million ($ 188,260) in mishaps. “It was a lot of fun for a minute,” Lise Naustdal told the outlet.

Norwegian Tipping CEO Tonje Sagstuen announced his departure after the huge error on Sunday, June 29, CBS news reported. She had been in the role since September 2023.

“I am very sorry that we have disappointed so many, and I understand that people are angry at us,” said Sagstuen in a statement, according to the outlet. “I have received many messages from people who had managed to plan for vacation, buy an apartment or renovate before they realized that the amount was wrong. For them I can only say: Unfortunately! But I understand that it is a little comfort.”

Norwegian Tipping also apologizes for the error and for disappointing its customers. The company is reportedly investigating the incident.
