Warning: Spoilers too The gilded age Season 3, section 6
Season 3 off The gilded age have not had any shortage of drama, all from A messy weddingmore operation among New York City’s social elite and Frightened business agreements. But section 6 ended with the most shocking moment yet: John Adam’s death.
The beloved character played by Claybourne Elder was killed when he unexpectedly suffered a wagon on the street. The shocking moment came after helping his friend and former lover, Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson), through the latter financial ruin and unexpected reunion with the woman – Maud Beaton played by Nicole Blydon Bloom – who stole all their money.
For fans of creator Julian Fellowe’s historical drama about Manhattan’s High Society in the 19th century, John’s death is a major blow. It also marks the end of a short-lived LGBTQ story on the series between Oscar and John.

However, it quickly revealed that John – who is a descendant of President John Adams – and Oscar had a secret business.
Their relationship became complicated because both men lived out straight lives. During the first two seasons, Oscar tried court and later proposed Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga). While John understood what Oscar did, he was not for it.

The two eventually broke things, but John remained present – unless saw often – in the series. During season 2, playwright Oscar Wilde (Jordan Waller) took a taste for him when he visited New York to make his game, Vera; Or the nihilists. But it was after the show when John revealed to Oscar (van Rhijn) that he met another man – and was happy with who he was as a gay person.
During Season 3, John comes to the aid of Oscar and offers his economically banded friend an investment opportunity in an attempt to revive his career and business status. After writing him a check, Oscar was able to do well on the investments and start climbing back up the leads.

However, Oscar’s happiness was almost destroyed by the return by Maud, who was discovered to be a dancer at a Gentleman’s Club. After confronting her, he learned that she lost all her money that she previously swindled out of him during season 2.
In a change in the heart for Oscar, he later bought a train ticket for Sandusky, Ohio and gave her $ 100 with a warning she never returned to Manhattan.
He then offers his friend a little comfort over the loss of his money and says Maud was also deceived. When the two go down the street, John revealed that he “will invest more” in Oscar’s career and praised him for “defied the odds.”
“This is where we share,” John said, leaving that they will meet again when he takes a new investor for Oscar to take on as his “latest happy client.” In response, Oscar Gusade, “You are my Savior. I thank you with all my heart.”
Then, when John went out into the street to hail a ride, a wagon came into him and killed him in front of Oscar, who was left shocked and confused.
“The gilded age Has been such a meaningful experience for me, “the elder said.” As a queer actor, to make a queer character in this special historical environment feel both exciting and important. In the late 1800s was not exactly a time when queer people could live openly, and yet we know they existed, loved and found ways to cut out spaces for themselves. ”

“What I love about John is that he is complex-He navigates in a world that does not necessarily give way to him, but he has this desire to do what is right,” he continued, noting that it was “cool” that his character had a band of real history. “It is a reminder that Queer people have always been part of the story, although the story has not always chosen to light them up. I feel extremely honored to bring it to life.”

In an exclusive interview with People about Season 3, Fellowe’s Elder’s feeling about John who existed at a time and place when he could not be out in the open. “I think my main consideration with John Adams was that there are many people inevitably in a society that is quite intolerant of any deviation, so that means many pretend and many people live artificial lives, you know more or less successfully.”
“Overall, Oscar manages his double life without scaring horses and so on,” continues fellowes, before he teases it “when real grief comes into it, it is all unbalanced because you can not only pretend that nothing has happened and that you are doing well and everything is okay. You have to get through it in some way.”
The gilded age Season 3 will be broadcast Sundays at 21:00 et/PT at HBO and Max.
