A 62-year-old tennis fan was taken to the hospital after an advertising banner fell on her from an upper tripod during the Halle Open in Germany on Wednesday, June 18.
The incident happened in the middle of Alexander Zverev’s match against Marcos Giron when part of an ad sign came loose and fell on the lower bowl of the stadium’s positions and hit the fan. Zverev and a match judge ran over to the woman and gave her ice, as she held on her throat, according to Associated Press.
The tournament said in one News notice that the woman “was not affected by any major injuries and was able to leave the stadium on her own” but was later taken to a local hospital “for security reasons.”
Its director, Ralf Weber, also checked into the spectator at a medical center and promised her a season ticket to next year’s event as a “small gesture of compensation.”

“There has never been anything like it in our 32-year touring story,” Weber said in a statement, according to an English translation of the German news message. “We deeply regret the event.”
Tournament officials said they believe that the advertising board may have loosened from fans who “drum” against it during the match, according to the publication.
Officials checked nearby ads to ensure that their screws were secured tightly before the match continued.
“This must not happen and we apologize,” dedicated tournament officials.
Zverev won the match in straight sets after the game continued and continued to the round of 16 in his home country’s annual grass tournament.
