Openai’s latest update of Sora, its text-to-video-creation tool, generates such a realistic look content that error information experts warns of media manipulation on a whole new scale.
Sora, together with Meta Rival vibber, is part of a “growing family of AI tools” that allows people to create and share “hyperrealistic or fantastic content” free, with only basic technical knowledge, said CBS news. And new with Sora 2 is a social flow that allows users to share the movies they generate, creating a “tiktok-like experience”.
When Open AI launched the original Sora last year, it contained many “errors” but the consequences of its technology “felt long and wide”, said Police stone. The much improved Sora 2 only arises its “potential for disinformation”.

There is “a long story” of Openai “moves quickly, breaks things and hit later,” said Techradar. Not long after it was launched, Sora 2 has been melted into a “messy pile of potentially copyright-breeding AI slop”, said Futurism. Users have been bombarded with videos by Spongebob Squarepants Meth Labs, Mock “South Park” episodes and – because Sora2 allows the use of “similarities of the dead” – Deepfakes of Actor Robin Williams and scenes by physicists Stephen Hawking is “brutalized in horrible ways”.
Openai is currently “burning through cash” because unexpectedly large number of sora users generate “countless resource-intensive AI videos”. Despite the quality of the technology, there is no indication that users will willingly pay to continue using it, so “turning Sora 2 into an income source will not be easy”.
The energy needed to generate the films is significant, said Rolling Stone, with reference to MIT research, which even a “short, non-high definition clip may require more than 700 times the energy required to produce a high quality still image”. This has already placed “significant load” on Openai’s servers and the American electricity grid and requires a “huge amount of water” to cool data center hardware.
Hollywood has long been filled with fear of Actors are replaced by AI and dead actors’ images and voices used in AI-generated video material, said Ars Technica. Back in 2023, Robin Williams called ‘Daughter, Zelda, AI recreation for a “terribly Frankensteinian monster”. But now, before the reality of what the technology can do, she has made a public appeal to Sora fans to “please stop sending me AI videos of dad”.
Openai’s CEO Sam Altman has been apologetic about the use of actors in Sora. His company will offer an opt-out from “Sora Cameos for public figures who are recently deceased” but a spokesman insisted on the “strong freedom interests” in the continued use of images of “historical figures”.
Sora has “have guard-rails” for now, said Vice. Openai has installed a “moving watermark”, with an opacity that “pops up higher than most”, as a sign that a sora video is not real. But “How long will it be before people find a way to remove it?” Much more must be done to stop “inflammatory videos” of “something that never happened” tricked people into violence and “rebellion”.
