A solo plan passenger defends his choice not to give up a planning chair for which she paid, even though he is allegedly ashamed by a colleague.
In a post Reddits Aita ForumA 22-year-old woman was reminiscent of a new flight where she was pressed to give up her window seat for a child. It was a “long distance” flight, wrote the woman, and she tends to be worried about aircraft so she specifically booked the window seat for herself.
When the woman came to her seat, she was put a mother and her child – about 5 or 6 years, sat in the hallway. Quickly the mother asked the woman if she would be willing to give up the window seat so her children could sit there instead.

“I declined politely and explained that I booked the window seat with intention. She sighed but did not push further,” wrote the solo traveler.
But when the child was upset about an hour into the flight and complaining about not having the window seat, the mother began to make passive-aggressive comments aimed at the window seat passengers: “Some people just don’t have kindness in their hearts,” and “It’s so hard to travel with children when no one helps.”
The younger woman says she simply ignored the comments and put on her headphones for the rest of the flight.
When the flight arrived, the mother shared high with a nearby passenger who she hoped that some future flights would not include “anyone so selfish.” Again, the woman ignored the comment, but left the flight and wondered if she had the right to stand on the ground.

The comments generally condemned the mother’s comments and said that she should have bought the window seat, as the solo traveler did, if she knew her child would be so upset by not having it.
“To me she sounds selfish because you expect to escape for her child. She should have booked a window seat,” read a comment. “Some mothers do not realize that it is not the responsibility of others to accommodate them.”
Another comment said that mom’s documents were simply bullying, as a method to try to annoy another passenger to freely give up a place she paid for.
People previously talked to the travel spert Nicole Campoy Jackson from Fora Travel about exactly this scenario.
After an Instagram post about A similar difficulty, got viral 2023Commentators fought it out on the subject.
Sunny Anderson, Star in Food Network’s The kitchen even weighed inExplains her tag: “Sorry, mom. I’m sitting in the window seat for my anxiety. I should not be forced to explain it to your visible problems or be taken about it. If I ever can’t get a window seat, I’m legit to look for another flight,” Anderson wrote.
The comments in this case were divided, but the majority encountered the solo traveler.
“As much as possible, passengers should choose their places in advance for this exact reason,” recommends Campoy Jones. “I don’t think you can board a plane with the expectation of someone leaving their place for you.”
With a few exceptions, the airlines offer seat selection as part of the booking process, which passengers can use to ensure that their party is sitting next to or close to each other. However, some airlines take extra for the privilege of choosing your exact location and creating a barrier for some flyers.
If a disagreement escalates, she says, it really is up to the airline and the air hosts to offer customer service for the family if someone rejects to change places, she says. When there is a conflict, “It is no longer that a passenger’s responsibility,”
“Generally speaking, not on board a plane that expects passengers to switch for you,” says Jackson, “especially if your place is not as comfortable as (or more) theirs.”
