She moved out. Now her former roommate wants her to pay the electricity bill

A woman seeks support from the Reddit community because of an heated dispute with her former roommate about an electricity bill.

The poster, a 27-year-old, recently moved out of the apartment she shared with the woman she calls Patty, 25, and now questions whether she should pay for part of the bill after her departure.

Before moving out on April 25, the poster says they paid out the outstanding balance and transferred the tool account to Patty’s name.

The last bill, which covered the two previous months, was “substantially higher than anything we paid earlier” due to Patty’s increased heat use and her boyfriend’s extended stay in their place.

Although she was gone throughout March, the poster still shared on behalf of the month with Patty, and highlights her willingness to share costs even when she was not present, she says.

The situation escalated when Patty extended a week after the move and asked about the following power bill that included the last few days in April. “I said that in the final bill we already paid for most of April and her next bill will only include on April 26-April 30th,” explains the poster and noted that Patty’s boyfriend visited again during the last days of April and “use the heater all day.”

Patty then informed her that she would calculate what the poster was guilty during the five days based on the upcoming bill. “I think it is completely ridiculous,” admits the poster, frustrated by the lack of clarity on how the fees would be determined and the opportunity to pay for energy used by Patu’s guests.

After moving out, the poster says that Patty hosted several other people in the apartment, and a new roommate moved in just a week after her departure. She points out, “Whatever light they all spent will obviously add there,” which makes it difficult to share costs during the few days.

Addition to her frustration notes the poster her generosity during her time as roommates. “Keep in mind that I have gifted her lots of things when I moved out and also helped her with free resources for the school,” she shares and also mentions times she provided rides and covered the light proposal when Patty was gone for two months.

Despite her previous kindness, the poster is now invited to pay for days she cannot report exactly, including the use of Patty’s boyfriend and other guests.

“Now she will charge me five days that she will distribute based on her next bill? Plus I would pay half for her boyfriend as well,” she writes incredibly on request.

In the end, the poster chooses to stand firm in its decision to refuse payment for the disputed days.
