See Austin Butler’s latest campaign with YSL Beauty (exclusive)

When Austin Butler Was young, he was looking forward to the day he could carry scent.

“I remember the obsession,” he remembers. “My dad carried Cologne, my mother had her perfume, and it was a feeling of similar,” When I grow up I can wear these smells, “he says exclusively people.

Today, the 33-year-old actor is not just scented, he is the global ambassador for YSL beauty. In the role he is fronted campaigns for the brand MYSLF EAU de ParfumThe brand’s first woody-floral scent launched in 2023, as well as the campaign for MYSLF perfumeDescribed in an edition as a “more intense and sensual version” of MYSLF EDP 2024.

And he and the YSL beauty cooperate again for the debut of Absolutely mylfAnother Woody-Floral-Köln differentiated with its cool hit of ginger.

The new scent-which opens with a bergamot, ginger and cardamom, has orange flower in its heart and is grounded with warm forests and patchouli-inducing a full circle moment for Butler.

“To be able to pick out the smell of cardamon, the smell of bergamot, the orange flowers. When I say this, I am reminded of my parent’s scents – my dad was peppy and woody and my mom had cute floral things she would wear – and how they come together.”

This new addition to the MYSLF franchis also connects butler deeper to the Yves Saint Laurent, who founded his named fashion house in 1961 and launched its first scent just three years later.

“We only talked about Marrakesh where he had this house, and there were all these orange trees around and it was the smell of orange flowers. The house I was brought home when I was born and then I lived until I was probably 12, had an orange tree in the garden. So the smell of orange flowers and orange was a huge thing for me.”

When Butler is heated to Absolu, he discovered that it is “good for the night, when you go out. But at the same time it can be beautiful in the morning too.” He likes it to eat pancakes in the morning or evening, both “wonderful” experiences, in his opinion.

His tip: Wear it and see how it develops on your skin. He spreads it on the wrist and neck, a ritual that feels symbolic to add an “accessory”.

“It’s really like an accessory, right?

Just as scents have helped Butler “understand” a character’s personality and world, he also uses it as a tool to feel himself again.

“Having things that you can take with you around the world, such as scent, so that no matter what hotel room you are in, no matter what country you are in, it may be this through the line that creates the feeling of home and foundation,” he explains.

“I think that with the amount of travel around – when I make movies it is as if you are in the traveling circus, I have just finished something in Chicago and now I am here (in New York City) – I have learned that it helps my mind and my soul to have these through lines, otherwise you can feel undiscovered from what is at home.”

In addition to Cologne, Butler paces incense in his bag. “It’s delicious,” he says of the scent. “When I got home from the set for the whole movie I just did, I would light it every night and I took it with me here and I have lit it. So it has been like this through the line from the last job to me here in New York,” he shares.

Butler summarizes his care regime in a word: simple.

He admits, “More recently, I have been proud of myself that I have actually washed my face. I was not doing long. I was a little proud to just sprinkle water on my face. But I have had people that I have worked with who have encouraged me to (use) some face washing, and so I will do it and some moisturizer on the face.

His wellness routine is much more intentional. “I try to spend some time in silence every day, without a phone, especially the first thing the day before I am abundant by something from the outside world to really just check in. Where am I today? I think it feels good for the soul.”

Another important practice: to have an appreciative way of thinking.

“Gratitude, I’ve talked a little about it. My mom Used to keep a gratitude diary and I have done it consistently. I write them down in the morning, and then I find for the rest of the day, my brain almost looks at things and goes, ‘that’s a beautiful thing. It is something that I am grateful for, and you realize that they are always there, but that is just the lens through which we look at the world. ”

Working with YSL beauty and showing up in their MYSLF campaigns, which are anchored in bold self-expression, feels “serendipitous”, says Butler.

“I was really honored,” he recalls that initially the call to work with the brand. “It came at a certain time where I saw all these quotes by Yves Saint Laurent talking about individuality and remained faith in yourself. So it just happened to be serendipity: I continued to see things about the man who created this legacy and then to get that call and then be part of it.”

After two years to represent MYSLF, Butler says he feels like his best self “when I feel that I am in integrity. When I say I should do something and I do. When I am the same person private that I am public. I feel that it can sometimes be more difficult to be kind to yourself than it is for others.
