Secret Service shoots “armed” man near the White House during confrontation

A man is managed by US Secret Service personnel according to what the authorities call an “armed confrontation” near the White House.

Shortly after 12 o’clock on Sunday, March 9, Secret Service members “involved in a shooting after an armed meeting with a person of interest,” said Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi in a statement about X.

The shooting took place at 17th Street NW and G Street NW in Washington, DC – a short walk from the White House.

According to a preliminary statement from Secret Service shared by Guglielmi, the confrontation came after the local police warned the agency of a “suicide individual” traveling from Indiana to DC on Saturday, March 8.

Secret Service personnel then located the person’s “parked vehicles” before they saw “an individual on foot that matched the description nearby,” the statement says.

“As the officers approached, the individual noticed a firearm and an armed confrontation followed, during which shots were fired by our staff,” the statement continued. “The suspect was transported to a hospital in the area and his condition is unknown.”

The agency added that there were “no reported damage to Secret Service personnel.”

According to Secret Service, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) examines internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigation’s team, which it does with “all law enforcement officer-involved shootings” in the District of Columbia.

In a statement to people, MPD confirmed that the group led the investigation. They added that they had “no further details about the investigation right now.”

President Donald Trump were not in the White House at the time of the event, New York Times reported. The outlet said he spends his weekend in Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.
