Cynthia Erivo and Sara Bareilles shared an emotional exchange during a gloomy moment by 2025 Tony Awards.
The ceremony hosts Erivo, 38, and Bareilles, 45, appeared in Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday June 8 to perform during the show’s in the Memoriam segment and honor those in the theater community that have died in the past year.
And while the two artists gave a flawless reproduction of “tomorrow” from the musical AnnieThat was the moment the stage lights went down at the end of the tribute, which turned out to be most moving.
Bareilles, who were close friends with the late Gavin CreelSaw visibly break down in tears when Creel’s photo was shown at the end of the tribute. Erivo comforted Bareilles and wrapped her in a hug before the broadcast to advertising.
“It has been a remarkable year on Broadway, but it has also been a devastating,” Evil Movie Star said at the beginning of the segment.
