Revisit Val Kilmer’s 2021 People Cover Story: ‘He can’t be stopped’

Val Kilmerthe actor who is known for Top gun, the doors and more, died Tuesday, April 1, 65 years of age. When Val Kilmer was rushed to the hospital, coughed blood and found out that he had throat cancer in 2015, he did not know what the future would have. “The forecast did not look good,” says his daughter Mercedes, 29. The actor, 61, had to undergo chemotherapy, radiation and a tracheostomy that removed much of his ability to speak. Now cancer -free, Kilmer is still recovering from the devastation that the treatments erupted on his body. “There are things we do every day to calm the vocal cords and to repair them, but they are very injured,” says his son Jack, 26. “He doesn’t seem to be hurt when he speaks. Sometimes you can’t close him.”

Or slow him down.

After years of keeping a low profile – even when speculation swirled about its health – Kilmer is ready to showcase its new lease. “Now that it’s harder to speak, I want to tell my story more than everHe says in the revealing new documentary ChoiceWhere he looks back on his floors and describes the challenges of meeting and surviving cancer. After losing his voice, the actor changed creative gears and began to focus on painting and opening his Helmel Studios, a gallery in Los Angeles. He filmed one Cordial return to his beloved Top gun role As iceman in the coming Top Gun: Maverick. He also hopes to be able to speak again digitally through new technology by Sonantic, a software company that creates a cloned version of his voice with old recordings. Says Jack: “My dad has been crazy productive since he was diagnosed with cancer.”

You have to make the choice to breathe or eat,” notes Kilmer, which now has its meals through a feeding pipe. “It’s an obstacle that is very present with the one seeing me.”

While Kilmer is proud to be optimist, he is honest about having some very dark days. In one of the most gripping scenes he goes to a paid look at a fan show of his western 1993 Headstone. “Sometimes I feel so low and I really have blues, really hard,” he himself understands afterwards. “I don’t look good and basically sell my old self, my old career.” But in real form, Kilmer is quick to point out the silver feed. “It allows me to meet my fans, and what stops happening is that I feel really grateful rather than humiliated because there are so many people (who show up for me).”

Mercedes says that her father has handled herself through her health struggles has inspired her. “He has such humor,” she says. “Even in the hospital, he would crack jokes and make all the doctors laugh.” His Headstone Costar and Longtime Friend Kurt Russell Agree. “Despite his complications, he still sees the world and refers to those in the one he has always done – with an evil evil and determined devilish humor,” Russell says. Kilmer’s passion for performing was promoted early – during an active, adventurous childhood in Chatsworth, California, which made homemade films and games with their brothers Mark and Wesley – and also shaped by tragedy. His father, Eugene, an industrial and real estate developer, and mother, Gladys, was devoted by Christian researchers and raised their boys in the faith, even though they divorced when Kilmer was 8 in 1977, just before Kilmer started classes at Juilliard school in New York City, Wesley, then 15, had an epileptic and drained their in their in their. “Our family was never the same again,” he says.

He credits the support of his children to encourage him to receive treatment and even his Christian scientific faith when asked for healing. “I wasn’t ready to die,” he wrote. “Healing is not born of vanity, it was born of honesty.”

Despite Kilmer’s trial, Jack says that his father is still very much a strength to count on. “He has crazy energy. He can’t be stopped,” he says. “He wants to go out there and be the best he can be.” For Kilmer, this is all part of what has made his journey worth living. “I have bizarre against some. I do not deny any of this and have no regrets because I have dropped and found parts of myself that I never knew it existed,” he says. “I’m blessed.”
