A man fled from prison when his cellmate was released by hiding in his bag – and officials are still looking for him.
According to reports from CNNThe BBC and CBS newsSébastien Cauwel, head of France’s prison administration, told the local outlet Bfmtv On Sunday, July 13, that the man “exploited” his cell compensation’s release from Corbas prison, located near the southeastern French city of Lyon.

“This is an extremely rare event that we have never seen in this administration and that clearly shows a whole series of serious failures,” Cauwel said, calling the event a “accumulation of errors.”
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that the man was also under investigation in one case linked to organized crime, and local investigators looked at his escape as “part of an organized gang and criminal conspiracy”, according to the BBC.
Last month, the Lyon Bar Association caused anxiety about overpopulation in the Lyon-Corbas prison, the BBC reported, and Cauwel said that the prison currently has a coating rate of 170%.
