Formerly titled His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, Duke of York, Andrew will now be called Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, using the royal family’s surname for direct descendants of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

He has also been ordered to surrender his lease of the Royal Lodgethe 30-room mansion in Windsor where he allegedly lived rent-free for decades.

The news came almost two weeks after Andrew released a seismic statement that he would no longer use his royal titles and honors as it distracts from the work of the King and the Royal Family. He made the announcement on October 17, amid renewed scrutiny of the scope of Andrews ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Although the removal of Andrew’s titles is unprecedented in modern memory, he had not been a royal royal for several years previously. His step back from public life began in November 2019, when he gave an interview to the BBC News night about his relationship with Epstein – who died by suicide in 2019 pending trial – it was widely interpreted as a setback.

Days after the interview aired, Andrew, who at the time was widely known as the Duke of York, stepped back from his royal role. In January 2022, Queen Elizabeth gave birth to her second son military titles and patronage after a judge rejected his attempt to have Virginia Giuffrepp sexual assault trial against him dismissed.

Giuffre had alleged that she had been trafficked to Andrew by Epstein. Andrew, who always denied any wrongdoing, settled with Giuffre out of court for a secret sum, and hon died of suicide in April at the age of 41.
