Previous standout for basketball players in high school die in 4-wheeler crash

A former prominent basketball player died over the weekend in an ATV crash near his home in Mississippi, according to reports.

Cameron Woodall, 26, died at the site of the crash in Raymond, Miss. WLBTABC Affiliate Violent and Clarion Ledger reported.

“My heart goes out to the family, friends, many loved ones and Raymond High School and Raymond Basketams,” Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones told WLBT.

Local authorities said the investigation of the crash is ongoing. People have reached Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for more information.

Woodall was a star basketball player in high school, which led Raymond High School Basketball team to Back-to-back Municipal Championships 2017 and 2018, according to Ledger.

On the 6-foot-6 forward, the college basketball later played at several schools, first participated in the Copiah-Linkoln Community College before transferring to Grambling State and later Tougaloo College for his last season 2022-23.

Woodall was chosen twice as a second team all-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference player, Ledger reported.

While going to high school, Woodall told Wapt that he wanted to get to the NBA so he could use his revenue to give back to the local community.

“Since I was growing up, I had ups and downs in my life, so I feel that if we build more gyms and make the children go in and show their talent and show what they can do, and someone gives them a chance, and it will be a completely different world than now,” Woodall told the outlet. “Since I’m that kind, I give the chance. So if I come to the league, I know I can help someone get there and get all the young children out into the streets and stop the violence and help poor people to walk off the street and build shelters and such.”

Woodall was honored in a series of Instagram posts by Tougaloo College Athletics Department this week.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the unclear departure of Cameron D. ‘Big Cam’ Woodall, a beloved former Tougaloo College -Basketball place,” wrote the school in an announcement about his death. “Known for its presence of greater than life, fierce competitiveness in court and kind-hearted spirit of it, Cam left an indelible mark on the Tougaloo family.”

The school added that Woodall’s “influence extended far beyond basketball.”

“He was a friend, a brother and a real bulldog through and through,” according to school. “We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates and anyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”

A memory guest for Woodall will be held on Thursday, June 12, the school announced.
