Police release new details, names of 7 tourists killed in crash near Yellowstone National Park

The authorities have shared new details tied to the incident when seven people were killed after one tour car and a pickup crashed Near Yellowstone National Park.

On Friday, May 16 Idaho State Police (ISP) revealed the names and countries of origin to the individuals who died in the crash on May 1, which happened just before 19:15 on the US Highway 20 near Henry’s Lake State Park – about 16 miles west of Yellowstone.

The police previously said that the van wore 14 people, and the driver’s driver was alone. Six of the Van passengers and truck driver died.

The deceased varied in ages from 28 to 71. They have been identified as 28-year-old Ivana Wen from Milan, Italy; 71-year-old Jianping Li from Guangxi, China; 66-year-old Xiaoming Jiang from Guilin in Guangxi Province China; 64-year-old Li Nie and 53-year-old Aifeng Wan, both from Arcadia, California; 30-year-old Yu Zhang from Eastvale, California, which was identified as Tour Van’s Driver; And 25-year-old Isaih Moreno from Humble, Texas, who was identified as the driver of the truck.

The ISP said the investigators decided, based on the original evidence they gathered, that “Dodge Ram pickup crossed the center line and collided with the eastbound Mercedes cabin.” The police added that “the reason for the pickup movement” is still under investigation, and investigators do “crash reconstruction and further testing.”

In a statement, Idaho State Police Captain Chris Weadick said the authorities were “deeply grateful” to a “passerby” who “quit to help and sheriff Bart Quayle and his deputies from Fremont County who answered immediately.” He added, “their rapid actions undoubtedly saved life.”

“This is how law enforcement looks in Idaho – we work together when it means the most,” Weadick continued. “We would like to thank Fremont County EMS and Fire, many of whom are voluntary, for their rapid deployment, arrival and critical role in triaging and help the wounded. Their response made a significant difference in the immediate aftermath.”

“. Given by the dynamic nature of the crash, the number of injured and foreign citizens’ involvement, this has been a very complex investigation,” he also said. “We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding when we have worked to confirm the facts and provide verified information.”

Roger Merrill had driven home and witnessed the scene shortly after the crash occurred, he told Associated Press. He took a video of the collision’s aftermath and showed smoke covering the van and both vehicles engulfed in flames, waiting for the first respondents to arrive when spectators tried to take care of the victims.

“It is a very dangerous highway because it leads to the main entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It is extremely busy,” he said, leaving, “it took an unnecessarily long time for help to arrive just because of the site.”
