Paul Rudd recreates the 90s Super Nintendo advertising for Switch 2 (exclusive)

1991, Paul Rudd Played in an advertising that helped launch Super Nintendo in the US and his career.

Now, three decades later, the actor is reviewing that moment with a whole new ad for Nintendo Switch 2Mix retro memories with modern gaming magic.

“I have to say, I got a real kick from this whole thing that gathers,” says Rudd, 56, people in an exclusive chat about the ad. “It was pretty fun to do and get back into it again! Felt like old times, I really loved it!”

In the advertising, which debuted on television over the weekend, Rudd again dresses as its character from the Super Nes ad – down to his long black dust, indie rock hair and pearl necklace. “When you decide to go up to this type of game, this type of fun, this type of experience …” says Rudd and mimics Voiceover from 1991 AD.

“I was a working actor and still had a regular job when they hired me for this,” Rudd says, explaining that he “would do the kind of work I could get” – like waiting for tables in restaurants, or dj’ing and emceeing wedding and Bart Mitzvahs – to financially support their actors. “And I remember it was really exciting because this was one of the first commercials I got; and it was a national advertising, so I knew it would play everywhere. But commercials are what got me in the Union. So going back is really full circle.”

He also remembers that he was excited because he was “a fan of the product” and thought that the original commercial “just sounded like it was a cool thing.”

Not long after, it was modified and used the location of the NCAA basketball tournament, Rudd says. “They used a bit from the advertising for March Madness, and I checked (the players),” says Rudd. “And all my college friends thought it was the coolest ever. Because our college, University of Kansas, played in the tournament.”

Last summer, the fans reduced Rudds SNES advertising in 1991, the clip went viral on social media when viewers were shocked to discover that Rudd had been part of the clip.

“It was fun because some people sent it to me, and it’s always something I like myself – to see actors in early advertising as they did,” says Rudd, about the viral fame. “All my life, I’ve done it.” I remember the commercial, no way!
