Newark mayor arrested by federal police officers at the ICE Detection Center

Newark, NJ, mayor Ras Baraka was arrested outside Delany Hall, a federal immigration center, on Friday 9 May. Baraka had protested against the facility’s opening this week, claiming it was not legally run.

Alina Habba, interim lawyer for New Jersey, confirmed Baraka’s arrest X Friday, wrote, “The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, committed a violation and ignored several warnings from Homeland Security investigations to remove itself from the ICE internal center in Newark, New Jersey this afternoon.”

“He has voluntarily chosen to disregard the law,” she continued. “It will not be in this state. He has been taken into custody. No one is above the law.”

People were handed to Baraka’s office for comments.

Baraka has vocally shot back to the opening of Delany Hall, which is run by private prison operator Geo Group, claiming that there were problems with the building permit, per Associated Press and NBC New York.

Witnesses said that Baraka on Friday was trying to enter the building with ropes. Robert Menendez, Lamonica Mciver and Bonnie Watson Coleman for a previously scheduled “surveillance” visit and tour in the building.

However, federal agents would not let him inside, and a dispute occurred, activist Viri Martinez from New Jersey Alliance for Immigration said according to the stores. Baraka returned to the public area in Gates, but the heated exchange continued to be alleged.

“We are in Delany Hall, an ice prison in Newark that was opened without permission from the city and in violation of local regulations,” Coleman wrote. “We have heard stories about what it is like in other ice prisoners. We practice our surveillance authority to see for ourselves.”

Department of Homeland Security treated the event in a statement And stated that members of the congress bombed the building when a group of prisoners were bused inside.

“Members of Congress storming into a detention facility go beyond a bizarre political stunt and put the security of our law enforcement agents and prisoners at risk. DHS added that accusations that 1000-bed detention center have problems with building permits are “false.”
