New Orleans Boy, 6, beat and killed by a school bus

A 6-year-old boy was deadly struck by a school bus in New Orleans on Thursday, April 10, according to a New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) news message.

On Thursday, shortly after 8 o’clock, Mayson Richards was killed a block from his home, after leaving his mother’s car on Desire Street in New Orleans. He ran towards the school bus when it beat him.

After Richards was beaten, the bus stopped down the street. His mother then picked him up and carried him back to his car in an attempt to take him to the hospital. Two neighbors tried CPR until an ambulance arrived, a neighbor told Fox 8. The Kipp leader student was then taken to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The bus driver stopped at the scene. The driver showed no signs of deterioration and took a field butt test. No one has been accused, said Reese Harper, NOPD communications director, Per Wwltv.

One of the people who rushed to the stage was a family friend, Pastor Fredrick Sweetwyne. “Having a six -year -old dies on the street is very horrible. Our prayers are with this family and we ask God’s blessings over him,” he told Fox 8.

He added that he spoke to Richard’s mother. “I can’t imagine what she is going through with this trauma.”

“My little nephew is dead. You can’t bring him back. This is a problem!” Richard’s aunt, Andrea Haynes, told Fox 8.

“He loved his mother, he loved his grandmother, his uncle, he loved his paw. He loved everyone. He was a good child, a fun child and played every day. He was an amazing, amazing nephew,” she said. She also said that even if no one has been accused, “there will be a mood,” per wwltv.

An investigation into that fatal accident is ongoing.

Richards’ School, Kipp New Orleans School, released a statement and shared that the safety of students and staff is a “highest priority.” The school also announced that Sorgrådgiving and support services will be available to those affected.

“I am destroyed to learn the tragic loss of Mayson Richards,” said NOLA’s public school-superintendent-elected, Dr. Fateama Fulmore, in a separate statement. “Our thoughts are with family, friends and classmates who are affected by this heartbreaking incident.”

New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell also expressed her condolences. “Today our city grieves the heartbreaking loss of 6-year-old Mayson Richards, a bright, happy child whose life was tragically short.”

“As a mother, I can’t start imagining that the pain Mason’s family is experiencing. Our hearts are with them during this unthinkable time,” she said. “May his soul rest in perfect peace and have his family find comfort in love and support from all over the city of New Orleans.”

A representative of NOLA’s public schools did not immediately respond to people’s request for more information on Friday.
