Firefighters who responded to reports of an unpleasant smell originated from a home in New York made a confusing discovery.
According to New York Post And local shops Newspaper Day and News 12Bohemia Fire Department (BFD) in Bohemia responded to reports of an ammonia smell that came from the two floors home on Saturday, May 3. Inside, they found more than 60 cats, many of which were dead.
Suffolk County SPCA and the city of Islip Hazmat team were then called to the scene.
SPCA investigators entered the home around 19:30 local time, said officials Newspaper Day. There was no electricity in the house, so the investigators searched for surviving cats with flashlights.
Roy Gross, Head of Suffolk County SPCA, told Post that they found “28 deceased cats, over 50 cats alive.”
“These cats are currently with voluntary veterinarians, and they have a long way before the recovery,” added gross. “They are all very sick – three of the cats must be killed last night.”

The neighbors told us Post that the couple who owned the home would put out food and attract many stray cats that were eventually introduced. When the wife died several weeks ago and left her 75-year-old husband to take care of the many animals, the situation worsened, according to the outlet.
Suffolk County SPCA said in a press release That 61 surviving cats were removed from home on May 3 and now receive treatment. “Many of the cats require acute doctors,” the organization wrote.
The cats are housed and treated at the animal rescue organization’s mobile clinic, using the city of Islip Animal Shelter. SPCA is looking for $ 10,000 in donations to help take care of the sick cat animals.
According to News 12, the homeowner does not face fees.
People were enough for Suffolk County SPCA, Suffolk County Police Department and Bohemia Fire Department for further information, but did not receive an immediate response on Sunday, May 4.
