Nearly 3 dozen people dead, including children, after boat capsules

Almost three dozen people are dead after a boat enclosed, according to several reports.

At least 34 people, including eight children, died after the ship was turned in Vietnam’s Halong Bay in the middle of stormy weather around 14 local time on Saturday 19 July, VnexpressThe Associated Press and Reutants reported.

The boat, named Wonder Sea, had transported about 48 passengers and five crew members. A majority of travelers on the boat – including the estimated 20 children on board – were from Vietnams Capitol Hanoi, Per Vnexpress and AP.

So far, 11 people have been rescued after they were found close to the site of the incident, while others remain missing, according to the stores.

One of the individuals who was rescued was a ten -year -old boy, who was unconscious and adopted in a nearby hospital with several injuries, per vnexpress.

A 14-year-old boy was also saved by the first respondents after being caught in the boat’s well-known hull, Vnexpress and AP reported.

“Although the ship had turned and the cabin doors were locked, there was still an air pocket … enough for oxygen to come in, so the boy survived,” the Bui Cong Hoan, the vice manager of HA Long Cruise Ship Association, told Vnexpress.

The boat was enclosed due to strong winds, the local Vietnam outlet reported. Lightning and heavy rain were also reported in the Per Reuters and AP area.

The authorities were sent to the scene, along with 27 boats and two rescue crafts, according to Vnexpress. Rescue divers searched several areas in the boat, including the cottage and other surrounding areas, said the outlet, but their efforts became difficult by the weather.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh later issued a “urgent broadcast”, according to Vietnam news agency.

The politician “expanded his heartfelt sympathies to those affected and expressed deep condolences to the families to those who lost their lives.”

Tropical Storm Wipha, who recently met the Philippines and China’s southern coast, is also expected to pass through Vietnam’s northern region and have Long Bay’s coast next week, the AP reported.
