Mia Love, former GOP -Rep., Death at 49 after brain cancer diagnosis

Mia Love, a former congress woman, mayor and political commentator, has died at the age of 49.

The death of love was announced by her family on Sunday, March 23 in a Post on X.. Love, the first black Republican woman chosen to Congress, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a grim brain tumor in 2022.

“With grateful hearts filled to crowded for Mia’s deep influence on our lives, we want you to know that she died peacefully today,” the post started. “She was surrounded by the family in her home. In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia slid silent mortality and, as her words and vision always did, rose heaven.”

“We are grateful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We take some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the coming days,” the post ended.

The news comes after Love confirmed on March 11, 2025, that her cancer had stopped responding to the treatment and wrote an open letter published by Deseret News.

“My dear friends, other Americans and Utahns,” wrote Love. “I take up my pen, not to say goodbye without saying thanks and expressing my living desire for you and America I know.”

Love shared that she and her family had “shifted our focus from treatments, to enjoy every moment and make memories with the time we have.” She thanked her team of doctors, as well as family, friends and followers who had lifted her up in prayer to extend her life.

“We are not sure how long this season of my battle will be and I want to share and Reshare, some things with the world that I passionate believe,” she noted. “I write all this as my” living desire “and hopefully” lasting desire “for you.”

“As mayor, member of the congress and the media commentator, I have seen the worst of small politics, sharing rhetoric and disappointing decay of moral nature of some,” continued love. “The same roles also gave me a front line and backstage pass to be blessed and inspired by courage, vision and hope for America’s best daughters, sons and citizens.”

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Haitian immigrants who did not speak English on their arrival in America, Love’s Life Story was undoubtedly a version of the American dream. She attended school in Connecticut on a partial scholarship and graduated from the University of Hartford Hartt School with a degree in musical theater.

After moving to Utah in 1998, she joined Jesus Christ’s church of the last days of Saints and married LDS missionary Jason Love. She also became active in local politics and won a place in Saratoga Spring’s municipal council in 2003, before being elected mayor in 2009.

She then turned her attention to Congress and lost narrow a house chair to Democratic sitting Jim Matheson in 2012. But love was not discouraged. She ran again in 2014, and this time Won the election to become Utah’s first black representative at Capitol Hill.

Love served two terms in the House of Representatives and worked in particular with bills with a focus on bank regulation, pyramid programs and immigration. She was named House Financial Services Committee and joined the Black Caucus congress.

After she was narrowly defeated for re -election in 2018, love became a donor at CNN and a temporary conservative guest host at The perception. She also voted as an election for Utah in the 2020 presidential election.

Although she was diagnosed in 2022, Love publicly revealed her cancer trip in a May 2024 interview With CNN -host Jake Tapper. At that time, she shared positive results from a clinical immunotherapy study.

“Every scan I go through, it either does not grow, or it has decreased a bit,” she said about her tumor.

However, the forecast took another turn in early 2025, when her daughter Abigale published from her social media accounts.

“Many of you are aware that mom has been fighting GBM brain cancer,” shared Abigale on March 1. “Unfortunately, her cancer no longer responds to the treatment and the cancer progresses.”

In the open letter that love published about her sinking health days later, she shared her dreams for a future that she would not get the chance to see.

“In the end, I hope my life will have played any role and made a difference to the nation I love and the family and friends I love,” she wrote. “I hope you will see the America that I know in the coming years, that you will hear my words in the whisper of the freedom wind and feel my presence in the flame for the lasting principles of freedom.”

“My living desire and the wonderful prayer for you and for this nation is that the America I have known is the America you are struggling to preserve and that every citizen and every leader will do their part to ensure that the America we know will be America that our grandchildren and grandchildren will inherit,” she concluded.

Love is survived by her husband, Jason, and their three children: Aressa, Abigaile and Peyton.
