Melinda French gates Opens herself about what she describes as “almost a crisis of faith” which ultimately led her to unite her Catholic faith with her pro-selection.

During a sincere conversation on April 17 -section of Jamie Kern Lima -ShowThe philanthropist, 60, shared how her travels around the world as part of her work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-as she founded with ex-husband Bill Gates In 2000 – opened the eyes to new perspectives on the issue.

“I was out in low -income countries, three, sometimes four times a year all over the world. And I learned from these men and women in villages about their lives. And they would talk about children. And both men and women knew that when they could accommodate the births of these children, they were better,” she said host Jamie Kern Five.

“Or if they could limit, let’s say, they could limit and decide that they would only have three or four instead of six or seven, they knew they could then feed their children, their children could go to school,” she continued. “They had a chance, the children, maybe grow up and, you know, live their dreams.”

Melinda then recalled to have conversations with residents in these villages and learned that due to lack of access to contraceptives, many women had pregnancies “too close to each other” and “lost it baby too soon because the birth was too fast and her body was not done.”

She also heard stories about women who die during childbirth. She said that these confusing insights changed her perspective in an in -depth way.

“I began to realize, I believe in life. I believe in the lives of these children. The dignity of them, the inherent beauty the day they were born,” she explained. “But because of an artificial rule in the church that I am in-the Catholic Church, we do not allow women to have access to contraceptives. And so talk about an incongruence, right? And I had to really count on my faith.”

When she struggled with the question, she consulted “some Notre Dame researchers” to learn the story of “how the Catholic Church had come there, why they had come there.” When she spent time digging into the lectures, the books and teachings from Richard Rohr – which Melinda described as “a very liberal Jesuit priest” – she realized, “Wow, I actually have to teach some of these things because I can’t square the circle.” ”

She told Kern Lima that she finally concluded that she believes “in life’s dignity.”

“And yet we lose more children because of this,” Melinda noted. “We do not allow this tool to be given to women.”

Melinda said the experience was “almost a crisis of faith” for her. “But I could eventually unite them and say,” No, no, no. This is what I think and I know it’s true. And I will speak the truth in the world, “she explained.

While she acknowledged that the process took “a lot of courage and very inclined forward,” she said it has also strengthened. “Boy, it felt right to give voice to what these families and these women told me,” she told Kern Lima.

She added: “I felt, given my position at the foundation, I had a responsibility to go and vote for it and do something about it on the world scene. And it animated my life.”
