Mark Hoppus says that Blink-182 and Green Day rivalry from 2002 ‘definitely made us a better band’

In one Interview with NME Published Friday 16 May, Blink-182 guitarist reflected on his experience of touring with Green day 2002. Hoppus, 53, called it “very strange” because he was such a big fan of the band, consisting of Billie Joe ArmstrongMike Dirnt and Tré Cool, grow up.

“We were billed as co-headliners, but Blink closed every night, and it was a strange sensation for us,” Hoppus said. “Head over your idols is a bit strange.”

Hoppus added that they thought they were “hot S —” as the first punk band that ever had a No 1 disc. “Green Day went in ready to fight – musically, of course, they were super cool for us all the time.”

Offstage, Armstrong, 53, was “super nice” but it was a character change when it was showtime. “It’s like athletes,” Hoppus explained. “We can join different teams, but when we get on the pitch we will try to kick your ass.”

“We didn’t come up with that attitude, but they did. They blew us from the stage for the first nights and we were like, ‘Oh S —, we have to increase our game.’ “

“Then it was this battle back and forth about who could put on the better show and who could win people over. It definitely made us a better band,” Hoppus continued. He added that their competitiveness may have inspired their next album, American idiot.
