An active shooter and a law enforcement officer are dead after an attack on Friday 8 August, near Emory University and the head office of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said during a press conference that the department received 911 calls about an active shooter around 16:50 at 1600 Clipon Road, in front of the CDC Campus. The shooter was wearing a surgical mask, ear protection and had two guns, a rifle and a shotgun, per CNN.
When the authorities responded to the scene, they discovered the critically injured Dekalb County Officer, who died. He has been identified as David Rose, 33, and Dekalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson said he leaves a pregnant wife and two children, per CNN.
“Tonight there is a wife without husband. There are three children, one of the loss, without a father. There is a mother and a father, as well as siblings who also share in this traumatic loss,” said Cochran-Johnson.
Officers heard shots in a CVS at the intersection and entered the building. When they were inside, they located the suspect on the second floor of the building that held CVS. The suspect had been hit by firearms. Schierbaum said it was unclear whether the wounds were self -destroyed or from police fire. The suspect died at the scene. The suspected identity has not been revealed publicly.
Schierbaum said that the CDC campus “got several rounds in its buildings”, but officials were not aware of any injuries that occurred there. There were 92 children at CDC Campus’ Day Care Center, all of which were undamaged, per ABC News.
The authorities said the situation contained from 18:30 local time, per Fox 5. The FBI Atlanta and Georgia Bureau of Investigation investigate the event.

Mayor Andre Dickens said that the investigation is in the preliminary stages and said “In short, you will know more about (suspect) and some assumptions about his motives, but I can’t say right now.”
Dickens did not confirm whether the shooter was aimed at CDC or not. “He is a well -known person who may have some interests in certain things, which I cannot repeat the right to know with any confidence until the investigation is fully conducted,” Dickens said.
The authorities, after talking to the suspected shooter’s family member, theorizes that the shooter was either ill or thought he was ill and blamed the disease on the vaccine against 19, per CNN.
No civilians were injured, Dickens said. But four people went to the hospital for stress and anxiety symptoms, Per Schierbaum.
A CDC employee told CNN that he thinks he heard at least six or seven shots and called 911 from his car.
“It sounded like fireworks that went off, one shortly after the other,” said Witny Brandy Giraldo, Per WCVB.
Witness Randy Gold left a nearby hospital with his father, but said: “As soon as we turned to the outcome, people ran towards us, doctors, nurses, servants, everyone screamed that there is an active shooter,” Per CNN.
