A Louisiana society is in mourning after a volleyball player in high school was killed this week during a shooting at a house party.
During the early morning Tuesday, May 20, a shooting in the Central Parkway area owned near Overhill Drive in the city of Charles, Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) confirmed to NBC Affiliate Kplc.
The authorities identified the victim as a “young lady” per Kplcand Lake Charles College prep, a local charter school, later appointed her to 16-year-old McKenzie Rideau in A social media post.
The neighbors told the outlet that they thought Skytte took place in a short -term rental unit during a high school diploma. They added that they heard between 30 and 50 shots around midnight.
LCPD did not immediately respond to people’s request for more information on Saturday, May 24.
In the statement on social media, Lake Charles College Prep -Rector Freddie L. Harrison LLL wrote: “It is with deep grief and heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our own, McKenzie Rideau, a beloved student whose presence touched on every corner of our campus.”
“McKenzie was more than just a student, she was a light. As a proud member of the volleyball team and our lively flag line, took McKenzie Energi, determination and joy for every practice, every performance and every moment in between,” he continued.
“Her brilliant smile and friendly heart made it easy for others to feel seen, welcome and accepted. She had a rare gift to make people feel that they belonged, always encouraging, always uplifting, always tried to help everyone fit in,” Rideau.

Harrison also remembered Rideau for his “compassion, leadership and friendship”, which he urged society to “continue to lift McKenzie’s family, friends and teammates.”
“Let’s honor her memory by continuing to lead with kindness, love and unity just as she did every day,” added principal.
After shooting, a neighbor recalled, who caught the sound of obvious shots on a safety camera, to hear “what sounded like fireworks during my carport” before the sound of humans “took off in their cars” and screaming.

“I can say that the detectives with Lake Charles Police Department work on identifying people who were there and identifying suspects, and they work very hard,” Chief Shawn Caldwell said to the outlet.
“We have some people of interest, a real suspect, I do not want to say suspect yet, but we have identified some people, and we still have a lot of work left to do,” Caldwell added.

The anonymous neighbor also told KPLC that shooting “puts me a little more on edge”, adding that “no neighborhood is safe in this area” and that people “die of worthless acts.”
