Hollly Robinson Pete standing up for the autism community after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Claims about people with autism earlier this month.
During its press conference on April 16, the US Secretary for Health and Human Services said that people with autism will Never pay taxes, hold a job or go on a date.
These words were too familiar to PEETE, whose oldest son, RJ, was diagnosed with autism 25 years ago.
“First of all, it’s just not true,” Peete says exclusively to People. “We got our diagnosis in 2000, and it feels like I’m being transported back in time to a time when we didn’t know as much as we know about autism.”
During what PEETE, 60, refers to as “never day” in 2000, a doctor listed milestones that RJ “never” would achieve. PEETE shares RJ with his husband, Rodney Peete.
“A development pediatrician said that (RJ) would never speak, he would never have friends … in school, live on his own, have meaningful employment, never drive, never probably have a significant other, never marry,” reminds PEETE.
“And I’m not sure why she felt that day that she needed to sort during our three -year -old to all these” nevers “. But in some ways I’m glad she did it because it made me angry. It turned me into a gangster mom.”
Today, PEETA says she is “triggered” by RFK Jr.’s felt statements – especially his comment that “autism is destroying families.”

“Autism does not destroy families,” retort PEETE. “But do you know what does? Not having access to the health care. In black and brown communities, families cannot even get their children to diagnose autism so that they can get interventions and treatments (they need). These are the things that destroy families, not autism. So immediately I was so triggered to hear that because it is only in itself.”
PEETE, which founded Hollyrod Foundation To raise awareness and provide resources for families affected by Parkinson’s disease and autism, also say that RFK Jr.’s comment about people with autism who never paid taxes up for her.
“He started with it. And that for me … What do you say?” PEETE issues. “That they will be a Blight on the community? The taxpayers will have to cover (them)? In addition to the fact that my son obviously pays taxes and many people who are in the spectrum pay taxes.”
“He decided to marginalize. And what it is done has driven a little of a wedge in the autism society between those with high support needs and needs with low support. A wedge I have never seen before, and I have done this (for) 25 years.”

RJ is currently in its tenth season and works for Los Angeles Dodgers, where he is a club caretaker for Dynasty franchise. It is a job she says requires “a lot of manual work” and “long hours.”
“I am so grateful for Dodgers for having given the opportunity and to all employers who employ inclusive so,” Gushes. “RJ has only retained this job because he has received support there. They understand who he is.”
Peate also revealed exclusively to people a new milestone that RJ reached – living on their own.
“I really didn’t think we would control it from the list, and he did,” sharing PEETE. “He got an apartment and he got a place closer to the work so he doesn’t have to drive that far and so late. He loves it. I miss him already.”
