At least 10 children in central Alabama were injured in an upcoming case of child abuse, where they were sex trafficking – some of them by their own parents or other relatives – according to a local sheriff, who also said it may have been why abuse went undetected.
Seven people have so far been accused in connection with the crime operation, which seems to have started in Brent in 2022, about 50 miles southwest of Birmingham, said Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade. Most of the victims were between 3 and 10 years old, and one was 15, Wade said. The children are now in custody of the state and receive medical and psychological support.
The abuse occurred in a bunker, which was built as a storm protection, Wade said. He said the suspects accused people to visit the bunker and abuse the children.
Officials began to investigate in February after officials in children’s welfare warned Bibb County authorities about the possibility that sexual abuse occurred in a home near the bunker. Wade described the bunker as a concrete structure partly underground with a mattress and a toilet.

“I’m afraid there will be more victims and many more suspects,” Wade said at a new news conference.
The accused include William Mcelroy, Dalton Terrell, Andres Trej-Velazquez, Timothy St. John, Sara Terrell, Ricky Terrell and Rebecca Brewer.
All except Ricky and Sara Terrell have been accused of human trafficking, while Mcelroy, Dalton Terrell, Trejo-Velazquez and St. John is also charged with rape, sodomy and kidnapping. St. John is also facing allegations of bestiality and aggravated cruelty against animals.
Sara Terrell is accused of A count of sexual torture and two bills of sexual abuse against a child less than 12 years old. Brewer, the other woman arrested, is accused of eight bills each of human trafficking and kidnapping and three bills of sexual torture.
The seven are in prison either for being denied Bond at a hearing or prescribed not to get one, says Bryan Jones, assistant district lawyer for the fourth legal circle in Alabama, to People.

Jones says he expects Brewer and both Ricky and Sara Terrell will face further charges when their cases have been presented to a grand jury. It was not immediately clear if any of them had lawyers.
“This is by far the worst case that I have ever had to deal with when it comes to the type of abuse, the length of the abuse and ages for the victims that were abused,” Jones told People.
Wade also said that it was the worst case for child abuse he had seen in his 33-year career.
“Some of the victims, the perpetrators were their parents and various relatives,” Wade said.
The district lawyer’s office refused to discuss the alleged conditions between the victims and the suspects to protect the children’s identity.
According to the sheriff, the children were sometimes tied to a post or tied to a bed or a chair in the bunker and were sometimes drugged to make them compatible.
“Sometimes there would be several people who would come by and sacrifice these children on a nightly basis,” he said.
The operation is believed to have taken up to $ 1,000 per night.
“It’s hard to understand that you can do this to another person, but what makes it even worse is that they are children and their ages,” Jones tells People. “You’re talking about a child who was still either in or just coming out of diapers. It’s just incredible that someone could do this to someone who is so small and so innocent.”
“It’s hard to believe,” he adds.
