Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood star Masika Kalysha’s estranged husband Jamar Champ was reportedly killed in a wrong-way car crash on a Houston freeway. He was 38.
The crash occurred shortly after 12 noon local time on Tuesday, October 28, according to a press release from Houston Police Department.
A silver BMW was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the 6600 Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) when it struck a silver Tesla Cybertruck head-on. The BMW caught fire and the Cybertruck collided with a blue Freightliner 18-wheeler, HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant R. Dallas and Officer R. Young said in the HPD news release.
The Cybertruck driver was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police. The driver of the Cybertruck was later identified as Champ by his friends and family, per KHOU.
He was a former football player at North Dakota State University, who played one season for the team in 2005, per KVRR.
The driver of the BMW involved in the accident also died. Their names have not yet been released by officials. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, according to HPD.
An autopsy will be performed to “determine if the impairment played a role” in the accident, police told KHOU.
On Tuesday, Kalysha seemingly alluded to Champ’s death in a post to her X account. “God woke me up at 2am… I couldn’t sleep,” she wrote. “I didn’t know why. Jesus Christ, I just got the worst news of my life. Pray for me and my children please”
In one Instagram video, Kalysha asked that the media “refrain from publishing information,” but did not comment further on Champ’s death.
“I’m just asking, respectfully, that you refrain from posting information until I do. Because word spreads quickly to kids and even though my kids aren’t on social media, a lot of their friends are, and a lot of all their parents are,” she said in the video. “And I don’t want my kids to find out at school before I can tell them.”
Kalysha and Champ married in 2021 and share a daughter, 3-year-old Amari.
“I’m in shambles, please respect my family and my children at this time,” Kalysha wrote in her Instagram video.
In one Instagram Live video shared in December 2023, Masika revealed that she had been “separated” throughout that year. In 2024, she said under one interview that she is “going through mediation” with her “soon-to-be-ex-husband”.
