In a small town in Michigan, the high school and theater director Jacob Salisbury have formed something special with his students, one of whom he affected so much and positively that she decided to get a tattoo in his honor.

Josie, 16, recently went viral on tiktok To share that she had received a tattoo to honor the teacher, she says “practically saved” her mental health just by letting her freedom be unpologetically herself.

The couple met when Josie attended seventh grade before joining Salisbury’s class. Their friendship eventually bloomed into something transformative and beautiful for the teenager, when she tells people, he encouraged her to be herself and helped her through some tough times.

“Sal (Josie’s nickname for Mr. Salisbury) and I have a fantastic band. We have lunch together, I have voice lessons with him and we spend countless hours after school for theater productions. He is such an influence on me because he is not afraid to be himself. He had a great impact on my mental health because, without him, I would not have been able to do with me, I would not.

When she reflects on how much she has grown, says Josie without Mr. Salisbury’s guidance, she would “still be the anxious and depressed” person she felt she was in her younger years. “Run made me want to come to school, helped me find amazing friends and (encouraged me) to be who I am today.”

“I was very nervous about showing him because I had no idea how to react,” admits Josie how she felt before the big disclosure. But Mr. Salisbury’s wonderfully shocked expression proves that he felt otherwise. “I think it went really well. I really will never forget Mr. Salisbury, and I hope he knows how much of an impact he had on my life,” she adds.
