Girl, 14, dies after being attacked by Lion at home in Kenya: reports

A 14-year-old girl has died after being attacked by a lioness in Kenya.

The attack took place on Saturday, April 19 south of the Nairobi National Park. The lioness entered a ranch at a housing association where she attacked the teenage girl, according to CNN.

Kenyan Wildlife Services spokesman Paul Udoto told the outlet that the teenager was at home with another youth at the time the attack occurred. He said that the lion was probably drawn to the home because of “scarcity on prey in her natural range”, according to the outlet.

“There is no evidence of provocation from the victims,” ​​Udoto said to the outlet, noting that the lion entered the area after “jumping over a provisional fence.”

The second teenager in the home warned emergency recipients who found the girl’s body near the river Mbagathi. She reportedly received “damage to the lower back.”

A search for the lioness is still ongoing.

Deadly Lion Attacks is a relatively rare event, Udoto told the outlet, which reported that they “account for less than 2% of all reported incidents involving people and wildlife.”

The deadly attack occurred one day after a man was killed by an elephant – a more common situation, said Udoto – in the nearby area.

“KWS conveys its heartfelt condolences to the mourned families and continues to work closely with local law enforcement and communities to improve the safety of people living close to protected wildlife,” said the agency.

Udoto said that the organization is talking about ways to “strengthen security measures” to protect others from similar situations.

While Nairobi National Park is fenced on three pages, the southern limit to the nature reserve is open, according to reporting of BBC.

Udoto said that the attacks seem to be “linked to wider organic pressure and human intrusion on habitats.”

After worrying was raised around the lion population in Kenya, CBS news reported that the population has grown since 2010.

In a statement shared with BBC, Paula Kahumbu, head of the Wildlifedirect Conservation Group, demanded “risk assessments”, and noted that this was important “especially in well -known areas such as Savannah Ranch.”

When she described “prevention” as “our first and best line of defense”, she also demanded the use of “anti-predator deterrent systems” to protect those living near the park.
