Girl, 10, was found dead after being swept away when he went home

A 10-year-old girl swept away by floods Texas has been found dead, according to the authorities.

“With deep grief, the city of Brenham confirms that at about 10:00 on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, 10-year-old Devah Woods, a third class student at Brenham Elementary, was found deceased after a two-day intense search,” officials wrote in a news message.

“Our hearts are with the Woods family when navigating this devastating loss,” they added.

Forest disappeared On Monday, May 5, after severe storms caused fast flood water to move through Brenham, according to Brenham Fire Department.

Around 16:30 Local time that day Woods and her sister went home from school when the floods swept her, according to ABC connected Ktrk TV and local fox station KDFW. Her sister could find help and is safe.

“This is normal behavior for her to go home and go at the creek and come to her house. This was nothing unusual,” Melinda Gordon, with the city of Brenham, told Ktrk-TV. “This was a fast rising stream that no one could have seen coming.”

Several spectators and police officers tried to save Woods, but the flood took her away. An officer was also swept away at the water during the rescue attempt but was located downstream and treated by EMS.

Rescue efforts used land -based search groups as well as drones equipped with thermal imaging and specially trained dogs, said officials, noting that a total of 24 local agencies joined the search to find her.

At a press conference, Lieutenant Steven Tyler said that their hearts went out to Devah’s mother, Veronica Williams, as well as the girl’s entire family, according to local station KBTX-TV.

In his statement, officials wrote that the girl’s death “has deeply affected our society.”

“We ask all to continue thinking and praying for Devah’s family during this unthinkable time,” they continued. “Against the background of heart, Brenham has shown what it means to gather – with strength, compassion and unit.”
