Fugitive dad had “help” to hide 3 children in “well hidden” campsite: Police

The police have released additional pictures of the “well hidden” campsite where Fugitive Father Tom Phillips Hid with their three children in a countryside in New Zealand before being shot in a police shooting.

Phillips disappeared with his children, Jayda, 12, Maverick, 10 and Ember, 9, after an alleged dispute with his mother as early as 2021, People reported earlier. He had been on the go since December of that year.

New Zealand’s police then confirmed Phillips had been deadly killed in the morning on Monday, September 8 in Waikato – a region on the country’s upper northern island – after a suspected burglary in the small town of Piopio.

The police have then revealed further details about the case, including releasing pictures of the campsite where the father and children – who are now safe and in the care of unannounced Tamariki (Ministry of Children) – had recently stayed.

On Wednesday, September 10, police said in a separate News notice That they continued the search for the camp, which is believed to be the main place that Phillips had hidden in recent months. They stated that the area was “difficult to access” and “well hidden”, as well as to highlight “the challenging environment that the family used as their base.” They also said that they thought the suspect had “outdoor help” to keep his children hidden.

One of the shared images showed what seemed to be a provisional hut surrounded by trees, while another showed a shelter, and one contained a tent and tarp, a gas bottle, a campsite and packaging with what seemed to be alcohol.

“The police have released new pictures from this wider place, about 200 meters away, over some difficult terrain where the younger children were found on Monday,” said the latest edition.

Officials confirmed on Monday that Two remaining children had been discovered “undamaged” after the shooting and was “now safe”, per earlier News notice. Phillip’s third child had been with him at Skytte and was already in police repository.

In Wednesday’s release, Detective Seniorsjant Andrew Saunders said that officers had worked in a steep and uneven terrain to document evidence from the stage.

“It is a very gloomy, slightly illuminated area, surrounded by dense bush. The tent was well covered and dry,” insisted Saunders, according to the post.

“We are currently looking at a number of objects at the site. Apart from the burglary, we can now link to Tom, it is obvious that he had help outside,” he added.

The police confirmed in the publication that the officers’ vehicles and the quad used by Phillips had been removed from the site for Monday’s shootout, who also saw an officer seriously injured, on TEA Anga Road.

The injured official “continues to recover at Waikto Hospital,” the publication noted.

Saunders added that “Operation Curly” – focused on locating Phillips and the safe return of the three children – now “of course” had come to a conclusion when “police work enters a new phase.”

Morehu continued, “These are young children, and this has been an outstanding set of circumstances. Everyone does their best to ensure that we can return them to some form of a normal daily life.”

“We do not know exactly what it looks like, or how long it can take, we will be guided by the needs of these children,” he said in the statement and asked for integrity for the children despite the “enormous public interest” in the case.
