The suspect in mass shooting At Florida State University, Thursday, April 17, has been identified.
At a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil said that the suspected shooter is 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, a FSU student and son of a deputy who has been in the department for 18 years. McNeil did not name the deputy, but the agency’s website shows a deputy named Jessica Ikner.
“Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons and it was one of the weapons found at the scene,” McNeil said.
According to McNeil, Ikner was “embedded” in law enforcement society and was a member of Sheriff’s Office’s Youth Council. “He was involved in a number of training programs we have. So it’s not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons,” said the sheriff, calling the event “tragic.”
At least two people died and six other innocent people were hospitalized as a result of shooting near the Campus Student Association, FSU police chief Jason Trumbower told reporters. Trumbower said that shooting was reported to the Campus Police at 11:50 and that the suspect was “arrested immediately.”
The two people who died were not students and the suspect was also in hospital, according to Trumbower.
The shooter was found with a gun on them, and a shotgun found in Student Union Building, CNNreported, with reference to a law enforcement officer. Another gun was found in the individual’s car, reported the outlet.
The police department in Tallahassee takes the lead in the investigation, said officials at the press conference.
FSU has canceled all classes for the rest of the week.
