“Evolution of Dance” creator of being one of Youtube’s first stars (exclusive)

Today, it is not uncommon to get viral on social media, with popular videos that have billions of opinions. By comparison, perhaps a video with 500,000 views does not seem like a big deal – but already in 2006, months after Youtube launched it was a very big deal for Judson Laipplywhich became one of Youtube’s first viral stars.

The origin of “Evolution of Dance” can be traced back to about 2000 when Laipply started her public speaking career as a mixed comedy with more serious content. He remembers looking at a comedian on stage in Wisconsin who talked about being invited to a wedding where the guests performed specific dances every time a song is played.

“He’s like,” Who taught you these? Should I know these? ‘Laipply is reminiscent.

And then Laipply remembers that I thought, “” It would be really fun to see some of them as a medley. “” That idea was followed by another: arranging them in order can be even more fun.

Laipply wrote down the first 12 songs he felt would do a medley. Later he mixed the music and danced to it. “It went really, really good,” says Laipply. “It was 2001. Then I continued to perform and fine -tune and add and grow and get better.”

Over time, he perfected the routine, which would later be annoyed on video years later. Laipply says that even though he was not a trained dancer, he was athletic with a good feeling of rhythm. “I was really never afraid to do it,” he says about performing on stage. “I was so excited because I thought it would be so good, and I thought people would love it.”

Youtube officially launched on December 19, 2005; Almost four months later, on April 6, 2006, Laipply uploaded the video “Evolution of Dance” to that platform because it automatically generated a code that could be placed on Myspace.

“In 2006, we are still in the early days of using the Internet as a marketing tool or a community tool,” says Laipply. “Myspace was this fantastic place to connect and market.”

But since the platform did not have its own video home, he explains that to embed videos you had to get creative – and “that was the only reason I used Youtube.”

It took about four weeks before Laipply realized that his video took off.

“I remember going and watching and it has 30,000 views, and I am,” no way. This is fantastic. Holy Cow, who are these random 30,000 people who found it? “” He says. ” A few days later it went from 30,000 to 90,000. And then a few days later it jumped to half a million. ”

Popularity of “Evolution of Dance”, which went hand in hand with Youtube’s rising star, led to Laipply made performances on Today Show, Madison Square Garden and NBA Finals.

Its successful success also received two sequels to the clip in 2008 and 2016.

While Laipply admits that the original video – which has collected over 300 million views from February 18 – he changed his life, he did not let viral success go to his head.

“Had I not been a little older, I think I would have chased for a few things that sound really good at that time, but maybe I didn’t have the foundation for,” he says.

It also helped that he already “knew what I wanted to do for a living”, which allowed the success of the video to be a “huge boost for my career”, rather than a potential fork in the way.

“It made a difference,” he adds.

Today he still performs the dance, which has expanded to eight minutes, at the end of his shows. “It’s fun when someone comes up and says, ‘I remember watching your video back in 2006 when it first came out’ or ‘I remember someone sent it to me,’ ‘he remembers.” One of my favorite was, “My grandmother, my mom, my daughter and I watched your video and laughed and giggled with.” “
