Divers find body of boy, 12, who disappeared on Florida Beach

A 12-year-old boy disappeared when he swam at Fort Lauderdale Beach in Florida during a basketball team binding trip. A few hours later he was found dead in the water.

Officials began to scrub the sea in search of the child – who have not yet been publicly identified by the authorities – early in the evening of Friday 18 April, according to Miami Outlet NBC 6 and CBS news.

The boy had visited Fort Lauderdale with Team Jordan Basketball Club, his basketball team from Lake Worth, Florida, according to another Miami outlet, WPLG LOCAL 10. Several parents had accompanied the team for the binding trip, per NBC 6.

One parent told WPLG Local 10 that the boy swam in a group in the sea when the water became “rough.” The area was under a high RIP current risk, in fact until Sunday April 20 – which led lifeguards at the site to intervene.

The lifeguards brought three of the swimmers safely ashore but could not find the missing 12-year-old, reported the outlet.

After Preteen was reported, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (flfr) began searching in the water around 16:30 local time, and Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) then joined the effort, Per CBS News.

Flfr later ended his search, but the US Coast Guard and FLPD continued to look for the young boy, according to WPLG Local 10. The policy took over the underwater search at about 19.00, Per CBS News.

After about another hour of searching, the dive team found the boy’s body shortly after 8 pm, NBC 6 and CBS News reported. The police decided that the cause of death was unintentional drowning, according to the stores.

Fort Lauderdale Police Department did not immediately respond to people’s request for comment on April 19.

The boys’ teammates and their parents, of whom many watched during the hours long search, spoke to WSVN After the tragic discovery was made.

“Today’s Good Friday; it shouldn’t be so,” a girl told the Miami outlet. “We should pray to see if everyone is okay.”

“You never want to hear this or see all this,” the girl’s mother told Wsvn, “there is nothing else we could do.”
