Detectives investigating the case of a vermont -man, who was accused of murder of his mother and suspected of having shot his grandfather before he killed himself in jail in 2023, has never revealed details about his case on ABC’s 20/20.
Nathan Carman was arrested and accused in 2022 in connection with the death of his mother, Linda Carman, who was killed in 2016 while he was on a fishing trip with Nathan outside Rhode Island, according to one press release from the US law office for the Vermont district.
Nathan told the police in an interview after the incident that he saw “There was water in Lansen” on the boat, according to a recording split with 20/20. He told his mother to bring fishing lines when he tried to get emergency equipment at the steering house, but said the boat was under them and they fell into the water per police officer. He denied to see his mother in the water.
After the incident, Nathan submitted an insurance claim of $ 85,000 for his lost boat and told the insurance companies that he did not have radio helped or departed the boat’s emergency room because he did not realize that the boat was sinking until it was too late, according to 20/20. He also claimed according to the program that the boat was pushing east.

Oceanographer Richard Limeburner told 20/20 It based on data from the currents in the area, the boat would have driven the opposite way from which Nathan claimed. Nathan had also reportedly left a bucket of fishing in his car.
“There were too many inconsistencies. There were too many things that just didn’t add,” Special Agent Eric GUMPP told 20/20 by Natan’s story.
Nathan was eventually denied the insurance claim because of “holes in his story”, and a judge also ruled in the benefit of the insurance companies, with reference to the incorrect repairs that Nathan made his boat, according to 20/20. However, the verdict did not determine whether Nathan could have intentionally dropped the boat.

A few years before the boat event, in December 2013, Natan’s grandfather John Chakalos, a rich real estate developer, was found shot dead in Hans Windsor, Ct., Home. The US law firm said in their press release in 2022 that Nathan was also suspected in that case.
Christopher McKee, a former lieutenant at Windsor Police Department, told 20/20 These detectives decided that the person who killed Chakalos probably used a sig Sauer rifle after running ballistic tests on the culprit found at the crime scene.
When Detective, Nathan questioned whether he owned any weapons, he told them he had only an air gun, per 20/20. However, it was later established that Nathan had bought a Sig Sauer in New Hampshire a few weeks before his grandfather’s death. When confronted with the information, Nathan told Detective that he “lost” the gun and “didn’t know where” it was. The gun was never found, according to 20/20.
Detective also noted that there was an hour during the day of his grandfather death that Nathan could not account for his place of residence. He reportedly claimed that he left his house at 3 local time and got lost on his way to meet his mother for one of their fishing trips and did not hear from until an hour later at 4
Nathan died of suicide in prison on June 15, 2023, which was dismissed by his criminal charges, according to 20/20. However, the Windsor Police Department told the news program that the case of Chakalo’s murder is still active.
“I think (Nathan) is both a victim and a villain in his own story,” Casey Sherman, author of a book about the missing case by Linda Carman called Blood in the watertold 20/20. “Nathan Carman remains a mystery.”
