Passengers on a recent delta plane were forced to hold up a roof panel after it collapsed over them during their flight.

Tom Witschy, a 35-year-old living in Chicago in 19b, explained to people what happened at Delta Flight 2417 after it took off from Atlanta against Chicago on April 14. It eventually turned back to Atlanta.

“During the start myself and the passenger next to me heard a sound above us that we assumed was a bag that hit the head,” Witschy recalls. “Shortly after starting, it was a loud beating sound and the panel on the roof of the plane came off, crashed down, almost beat an elderly woman sitting in the hallway in front of me in 18B.”

The panel seemed to hang on just the front right corner.

“I grabbed the corner closest to myself to prevent it from colliding against our line when we are still rising, and the men opposite me and diagonally did the same,” he adds and referred to the flight crew that could not help because everyone sat for the ascent.

“We three continued to hold it for 10 to 15 minutes until the flights could come up from their seats and investigate,” explains Witschy. “We continued to hold it as they warned the pilots and searched for their layer by tape. This lasted for another 30 minutes.”

At this point, a colleague passenger, as Witschy said was an engineer, and balanced on an armrest to examine the roof panel.

“My neighbor decided that there was a missing screw/bolt that held the corner of the panel directly above the woman in front of me and the panel and it would not stay in place absent us who taped it,” shares witschy. “One of the flights scoured the plane until a man in front of us offered light yellow Scottish tape that he happened to have, and that was what she and several other people used to tape it.”

The yellow band used to hold up the collapsed roof panel.

Witschy estimated that they held up the panel with their hands for 30 to 45 minutes before the band came to something remedy the situation.

“The flights were mostly very nice and continued to offer us free drinks to keep it up in the flight but everyone was like:” It is 10 o’clock, we are okay, “he says, adding that the flight returned to Atlanta” even if we were closer to Chicago Midway. ”

“What should have been a quick flight in an hour and change ended up being a trial all day,” adds Witschy. “For our problems, the air hosts offered those of us who sat around the panel 10,000 miles each to keep it up and help. I still left a refund request because it cost me a day of work, but have not heard from Delta.”

“People were most shocked that it happened at all, that we kept it as long as we were disappointed that we returned to Atlanta after all this,” concludes Witschy.

In a statement to people, a Delta -Talaman said: “Delta thanks our customers for their patience and cooperation. We apologize for the delay in their travels.” The airline added that the plane was a Boeing 717 aircraft that returned to Atlanta “due to maintenance of the cottage” and “The flight continued with about a two-hour delay in another aircraft.” There were no injuries.
