Cardinals to select the papo Franci’s successor

• Conclave to choose a new pope begins May 7 per Vatican

• The news comes just over two weeks after Pope Francis’s death at the age of 88 on April 21

The conclave, which is held to choose a new pope, will start in nine days.

College of Cardinals – Cardinals within the Catholic Church all over the world – will converge on May 7 for the electoral process, according to Vaticanwho announced the date on Monday April 28.

According to a spokesman for the Vatican, cardinals in Rome made “the decision of the fifth general congregation, held on Monday morning in the Vatican Synod Hall.”

“The Konklaven will take place in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, which will remain closed to visitors during these days,” added spokesman.

The Cardinals will lock themselves inside the Sixtin chapel to start the voting process on May 7, which is just over two weeks after the Pope Francis died of a stroke on Monday 21 April at the age of 88.

The conclave process, as historically been secret, entered the limelight with Oscar-Winning 2024 film Conclave game Ralph Fiennes.

During his pavedity, Pope Francis appointed many cardinals from Asia, Africa and his original South America, rather than Europe. Francis himself was the first non-European Pope since the eighth century and the first Pope from America.

Bill Cavanaugh, an American Catholic Theologian and Professor of Catholic Studies at Depaul University, told people that there is Restrictions on which cardinals can vote for the next pope.

“Only cardinals under 80 can vote,” Cavanaugh said. “And a papal candidate needs two -thirds of the votes for the voting cardinals to be selected.”

The conclave also consists of public congregations, said nationally recognized Pope Francis expert Kathleen Spows Cummings, who engages all cardinals – not just voting – in discussion about the needs of the church.

After each vote, Cummings said, smoke is sent up the Sixtin chapel. If the smoke is black, the cardinals are still considering, but if it is white, “we have a new pope,” Cummings said.

Some experts have speculated that the late Pope’s successor can share in their more progressive ideals for the church, but Cavanaugh suggested “Everything can happen.”

“It’s not like there is a clear front runner right now. There is a lot of speculation,” he said. “Will it come back to another European Pope, or will it be another Pope from the Global South, from Asia, from Africa? We just don’t know.”
