Barbers say men ask for eyelash, but is it safe? An ophthalmologist weighs in

A new trends for men’s care that involved to trim the eyelashes is seemingly growing increasingly popular – but the doctors say it may not be healthy.

New videos filmed in barbershops has circulated on Tiktok It has men who show off their shaved lashes. Barbers can be seen with the help of mower, electric razor and other tools to trim men’s lashes and claim that it looks more masculine.

A video, is divided into a Barbers TikTok account in Januaryshowed a client who cut down his lashes almost against the skin.

“I personally witnessed a client who asked a hairdresser to shave off his eyelashes. He said he didn’t like how long they were and that his wife criticized them for seeing for feminine. He was even willing to pay extra,” read the video.

“But my question to all the barber out there is: Is this service really feasible? Should it be allowed in barbershops? Would you do it if a client asked?” The caption added. “And the question of millions of dollars: Is it more male to shave off your eyelashes?”

Dr. Nicole Bajic, an extensive ophthalmologist at the Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute, tells people that the most important thing to remember about eyelashes is that they serve a specific purpose: to help their eyes stay healthy by keeping debris out.

“People can certainly trim their lashes, and sometimes we even permanently remove some of them for selected patients (when the lashes grow in strange directions and point in their eyes), but I would not recommend cutting or removing them if it does not cause significant problems,” she tells people.

“It is important to remember that the eyelashes serve a purpose to protect our eyes,” adds Bajic. “Eyelashes act as a protective hue and keep away debris, allergens and other pollution in the air away from our eyes.”

According to Bajic, eyelashes also act as sensors for the eye to prevent trauma, as fringes activate a person’s blink reflex when they feel an incoming object.

“There is also a thought that they can help prevent dry eye by preventing the tear film from evaporating too quickly,” adds the doctor.

Bajic also shared advice for the tictokers who may have already jumped on this trend.

If you have already trimmed your lashes, they will grow back, “she says, noting that the natural growth cycle for lashes is about 6-10 weeks.” But you may want to wear sunglasses more often to keep debris and other material away from your eyes. ”

When it comes to social media, many users online believe that the eyelash trimming trend is not the best idea in the first place.

“Do we forget that we need our eyelashes to keep rubbish out of our eyes?” A commentator wrote on a tictoch that contained the eyelash-shaking process.
